Postdoctoral position in computational genomics at Cornell University

A POSTDOCTORAL POSITION is available in the laboratory of Dr. Adam Siepel in the Department of Biological Statistics and Computational Biology at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). The research focus will be in the general areas of comparative/evolutionary genomics, population genetics, phylogenetics, and/or functional element identification, with specific topics to be determined in consultation with the candidate. The candidate will be expected to participate in both methods development and data analysis, to work cooperatively with other lab members and outside collaborators, to help maintain and improve the laboratory infrastructure (software, databases, etc.), and to actively publish and present results. The position involves no mandatory teaching, but interested candidates will be given opportunities to deliver guest lectures and mentor undergraduates. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and independent, will have a strong background in one or more of the areas of focus, a serious interest in molecular biology and genetics combined with good skills in mathematics and computer science, and a strong record of accomplishment in research.

Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, genetics, molecular biology, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  2. Research experience (with strong first-author publications) in computational genomics.
  3. Fluency in probabilistic modeling and computational statistics.
  4. Proficiency in programming, ideally in C or C++ as well as in scripting languages such as perl, matlab, or R. Should be comfortable in a linux environment, with large data sets, computer clusters, and databases.

Term

The term for ths position is flexible but most likely will be 2-3 years. The proposed start date is Spring or Summer of 2008. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

About the Group

The Siepel Lab currently consists of the PI, three postdocs, and a graduate student, plus a rotation student and two undergraduates. Growth by 2-3 students and postdocs is likely in the near future. We are supported by grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Microsoft Research, the Packard Foundation, and the National Cancer Institute. Our main focus is comparative genomics of mammals, but we are also involved in the analysis of genomic data from plants, microbes, Drosophila, and other organisms. Our work includes both methods development and data analysis, and both independent projects and large collaborative endeavors such as the rhesus macaque genome project and the Mammalian Gene Collection project. For more information, see the lab web page.

About Cornell

Cornell is home to a large, active community of researchers interested in evolutionary genomics, population genetics, and other areas of mathematical and computational biology. It is located in Ithaca, NY, a small city with a diverse community, a rich cultural life, and (reportedly) more restaurants per capita than New York City. The Ithaca area is known for its spectacular gorges and waterfalls, lake-side wineries, and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. General information on postdoc life at Cornell is available from the Office of Postdoctoral Studies.
